About the book:
When a socialite from the nation’s capital embarks on a journey to the Wild West, her life is changed forever.
A setting populated by hundreds of laborers, outlaws, and Indians is
hardly the place for a wealthy general’s daughter. But Josephine Cain is
determined to visit her father, who supervises the day-to-day work
involved in the grandest ambition of post-Civil War America: the
building of the Transcontinental Railroad. Life with the railroad is far
from the proper life Josephine is used to, and she faces deadly
gunfights, harsh weather, and vigilante uprisings. She is torn between
the West and the East; between her privileged upbringing and the
challenges of a new frontier; between the pull of the suitable beau her
parents approve of and an attraction to a rough but charming Irish
railroad worker. But if Josephine is willing, she just might find a new
life, a unique purpose . . . and true love.
My thoughts:
Spunky Heroine? Check!
Great Story? Check!
Handsome Hero that I'd like to meet? Check!
Josephine Cain is the spoiled daughter of a military man turned
railroad man in charge of the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. After
the death of her brother and cousin in the Civil War her mother has retreated
into “illness” and takes to her bed whenever things don't go right – Josephine
however is chafing against the rigid society rules of mourning and her mother's
refusal to live life again. When her father invites her to travel by rail to
the 100th Meridian she accepts and along with her aunt and a new
suitor she travels to visit him. Her new suitor has plans of his own though
that involve revenge against Josephine's father who ordered the death of her
suitor's father. While traveling Josephine is troubled by things she see's in
this man and meets another man (don't they always lol)....
This book covers about 9 months approximately of the building of the
Transcontinental Railroad starting from Omaha, Nebraska (which is where I live)
and continuing up into Wyoming. The 9 months is not the true amount of time it
took to build this portion of the Union Pacific Railroad and the general only
worked for the Union Pacific. The story ends with the meeting of the Union
Pacific and the Central Pacific. There is a wonderful writeup that talks a
little about the writing and research that Nancy Moser conducted for her
writing and she does state that she “sped” up the time frame to write the book.
It probably would been a much longer book than 29 chapters or 325 pages if she
hadn't.
I'd love to see Nancy Moser write a sequel to this book featuring our
hero's younger brother. We meet him throughout the book several times and it
would be neat to see him mature in his spiritual journey, meet a girl and have
a book of his own.
Outstanding book – Nancy? Is there a sequel coming – I sure hope so!
This would make a great series & if someone is looking for a great birthday
or Christmas gift to give a friend The Journey of Josephine Cain is a great
one!
