Back in February I participated in the blog tour for The Rhythm of Secrets which is the story of a little girl orphaned during the early 1920's. You can read more about the book here. So, when the opportunity came up to review her next book I jumped at the chance.

About the book:
A storm the size of Texas brews when Gloria Powell and Kai Chang meet in a Dallas hotel. They have come to discuss the future of Lily, the daughter Gloria adopted from China and the sister Kai hopes to reclaim. Kai is a doctor who had to give up her little sister during the Cultural Revolution and has since discovered that an inherited genetic defect may be waiting to fatally strike Lily.
Gloria's relationship with her daughter is tattered and strained, and the arrival of Kai, despite the woman's apparent good intentions, makes Gloria fearful. Gloria longs to restore her relationship with Lily, but in the wake of this potentially devastating diagnosis, is Kai an answer to prayer...or will her arrival force Gloria to sacrifice more than she ever imagined?
My thoughts:
Reclaiming Lily is a wonderful read, filled with emotion and loss and ending with the reunification of family torn apart. Gloria & Andrew Powell desire a child and end up adopting a 9 year old little girl from an orphanage in China. The child "Joy" (Lily in China) is the daughter of a family who already have 3 daughters and must give her up in order to save her life when China mandates that each family can only have 1 child. After 9 years of living in the orphanage Gloria & Andrew adopt her and take her back to the states and to racial upheaval against the Asians.
Nine years later, Dr Kai Chang tracks Lily down and introduces herself to the family with the intention of getting to know her sister, make sure she is alright and to share a possible health problem that could affect her sister's life.
This book is outstanding. I managed to read it in one day and I'm sure I will read it again and find details that I didn't find the first time. As always, Patti Lacy's books are well researched, based on the lives of real individuals and full of history. In this case it's the Cultural Revolution and the lack of basic human rights in China. There is also the story of little girls in China thrown away due to the One Child mandate and a intense lesson in PKD and it's affect on the lives of individuals all around the world.
