About the book:
Michigan, 1880 - Annalisa Werner's hope for a fairy tale love is over. Her husband failed her in every way and now his death has left her with few options to save the family farm. She needs a plentiful harvest. That, and a husband to help bring it in. Someone strong, dependable. That'll be enough. A marriage for love...that's something she's given up on.

So her father sends a letter to his brother in the Old Country, asking him to find Annalisa a groom.

Then a man appears: Carl Richards, from their home country of Germany and a former schoolteacher---or so he says. He's looking for work and will serve on the farm until her husband arrives.

With time running out, she accepts his help, but there's more to this man than he's admitting. He's also gentle, kind, charming---unlike any man she's ever known. But even as Carl is shining light into the darkness of her heart, she knows her true groom may arrive any day.

My thoughts:
This is a wonderful story. You have the heroine who grew up believing that women had no worth except to bear children and making the man's (or her husbands) life easier & take care of his children. Her husband is verbally abusive (but not physically thank heavens) and dies at the beginning of the book. She's frustrated because she's trying to save money to purchase the farm and put some away for her children's education - and he's a gambler. When he is murdered the likelihood of them losing the farm is almost a given - unless her father can find her another husband. And due to the way she was brought up and the community she lives in she is to give in without any consideration to what she wants.

Then there is the hero - he is nothing like what Annalisa has ever known. He is kind, gentle, loves children, hard working (even tho he knows nothing about farming or any other kind of basic work) and considerate toward Annalisa and her feelings, needs and caring for her.

What I loved about A Nobel Groom is the choice little nuggets of spiritual wisdom that is added to the book and designed to encourage Annalisa (and thus the reader).

Annalisa isn't a fighter (at least not on the outside) and believes that men have the right to use her as a doormat and Carl opens her eyes to how God sees her and that she can be cherished, loved and blessed with a loving husband and a good life. This is a beautiful book and one that will have a special spot on my shelf. I would personally love to see a sequel that features Idette, Annalisa's 17 year old sister, who is abused and treated terribly by her new husband. I will also say that there is a surprise ending that really shocked me and saddened me - not to tears but for the loss of opportunity and future for one of the young characters in the book.

I would of loved to see a book discussion list of questions in the back of the book - this would be a great book for a book club!
