Giveaways you might be interested in:

Today is the last day to enter the giveaway for this book.  It looks really good and I thought you might be interested in it.  We need to introduce our children to HEROES that stand for what they believe in - not for how many baskets they can hit, how skimpy their clothes are, or how many times they've gotten arrested for shooting someone or getting caught with drugs!

We are created by a great God to do great works. He invites us to outlive our lives, not just in heaven, but here on earth. - Max Lucado

Seven Miles to FreedomSeven Miles to Freedom
by Janet Halfmann
Illustrated by Duane Smith
ISBN: 9781600602320

Growing up a slave in South Carolina, Robert Smalls always dreamed of the moment freedom would be within his grasp.  Now that moment was here.

Robert stood proudly at the Planter's wheel.  Only 7 miles of water lay between the ship and the chance of freedom in Union territory.  With precision and amazing courage, he navigated past the Confederate forts in the harbor and steered the ship toward the safety of the Union fleet.  Just one miscalculation would be deadly, but for Robert, his family and his crewmates, the risk was worth taking.

Seven Miles to Freedom is the compelling account of the daring escape of Robert Smalls, a slave steamboat wheelman who became one of the Civil War's greatest hereos.  His steadfast courage in the face of adversity is an inspiring model for all who attempt to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges.

MaMi Skincare - Review & Giveaway

This contest has closed - the Winner has been drawn and emailed.  She has 48 hours to
respond or another winner will be chosen.  Thanks for entering!

MaMi Skincare - My review:
I recently received a sample pack of the MaMi Skincare line for the face and I was so pleasantly surprised.  I'd forgotten how nice it is when you face is soft and completely clear of all the daily crud that ends up on our skin.

I used to use another line of organic/natural skin care and I loved it until it started bothering my skin, making my eyes itch and get red.  This line also had a wonderful foundation that I loved and then discontinued it - it's so very hard to find a foundation that is for porcelain colored skin - but that's another story.

MaMi Skincare is made with pure, highly concentrated ingredients that produce quick visible results.  In a few simple steps you can experience dramatic, positive changes in your skins health and appearance.  My skin was flaking, I was starting to break out from the weather changes and I'm sure also the stress of being laid off.  I really enjoyed the gentleness & the wonderful clean scent of the cleanser and the moisturizer.

The cleanser is clear and not quite as thick as most other cleansers.  It's a completely natural, rose hip foamer which calms, cleans, soothes and tones your skin and is made of a combination of rose hip seed, seaweed and essential oils for nourishment and protection.  The ingredients were specially chosen for:
  1. Seaweed conditions and hydrates the skin with vital nutrients and vitamins.
  2. Rose Hip treats your skin for overexposure to the sun and pigment spots.
  3. Essential oils revitalize and renew your skin back to it's natural state and prepares it for exfoliation and moisturizing.
What has a really impressed me with the MaMi Skincare line is it's dedication to keeping their ingredients simple, organic, safe for the skin and unharmful for humans.  You will not find toxins, parabens, filters, petrolatums or sodium laureth in their products and they are also eco friendly meaning that the packaging can be recycled and they also give back 2% of their profits to the Tsunami Children's Foundation.

Spring Cleaning Tips to Protect from Identity Theft

Hi!  My name is Tina Peterson and I am a paper addict.

There I admit it.  Part of the problem is that I just don't know when I'll need something so I hang onto it.  Part of it is that I don't have anywhere to take papers that need to be shredded (I used to take them to work) and so these papers just sit in a bag waiting for me to take them to Office Max or Office Depot to pay for them to be shredded - and I just CAN'T bring myself to do that.

Here are the Top 5 Tips from the Identity Theft Resource Center for spring cleaning the home office:

I need to do this:
Begin with the Basics: Sort through the piles of paperwork on your desk and in your office drawers.  Place them into two categories: ‘save’ and ‘shred.’

Proper Storage: Organize the "save" pile into labeled folders and be sure to put anything confidential into a fire-proof lock box.  The "shred" pile should be properly disposed of with a Cross-Cut shredder, such as a Fellowes P-12C

Cross-Cut technology is an important feature for a shredder because it provides high security, destroying confidential information into unidentifiable pieces.  Equally important are enhanced safety features, such as Fellowes' SafeSense technology, which shuts the machine down when hands come too close to the paper opening, which is so important if you have children.

(Note: the Fellowes Cross Cut Shredder is available at Target for $84.99.  It fits under your desk, has a 4 gallon basket to hold your shredding and will shred up to 12 pages at a time - including staples, paper clips and credit cards)

I need to do this:
Get a Digital Makeover: Refresh your home office computer by deleting files you no longer use and backing-up important data onto an external hard drive.  Clean out your inbox and change all passwords.  Refreshing your computer is a good practice to follow throughout the year as well.

Make Life Easier: Plan ahead by purchasing organizational tools for your desk, such as computer risers or file folder holders.  This will help clear clutter from your desk top while keeping things within arms reach.

Freshen Up: Get rid of dust and germs that easily build up on office equipment such as keyboards, telephones and cabinets.  You'll feel instantly more productive with a clean workspace.

Simplify Your Life by Marcia Ramsland
I took a 6 week women's class at church a couple of years ago based on the book Simplify Your Life by Marcia Ramsland of OrganizingPro.com.  We all agreed that 6 weeks was not enough time to utilize everything that Marcia's book had to share.  In this book you will learn how to: Simplify your weekly calendar, daily schedule, personal organizing center (no more piles!), and have a great day!.  She then walks you through 4 systems that will teach you the steps to succeed at organizing your life and keep it that way.

She has a couple of wonderful articles on organizing the paper in your life and also organizing your desk.  You can purchase her book HERE and while you wait you might check it out these articles:

WHAT am I eating?

Photobucket

Do you know what your kids are eating when they sit down at school for lunch?  Here's a pop quiz:

What is?
A. Enriched corn meal (Ferrous Sulfate, Niacin, Thiamin MonoNitrate, Riboflavin and Folic Acid), Corn and/or Sunflower Oil, Whey, Salt, Cheddar Cheese (Cultured Milk, Salt and Enzymes), and less than 2% of the following: Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil or Canola Oil, Maltodextrin, Disodium Phosphate, Artificial Flavor,

How about?
B.  ”whey, milkfat, milk protein concentrate, salt, sodium tripolyphosphate, contains less than 2% of citric acid, sodium phosphate, lactic acid, milk, calcium phosphate, yellow 5, yellow 6, cheese culture, enzymes.

Or?
C.  Enriched Wheat Flour - enriched with ferrous sulphate (iron), B vitamins (niacin, thiamine mononitrate [B1], ribofavin [B12] and folic acid). Sugar, Corn syrup, Water, High fructose corn syrup, Vegetable and/or animal shortening - containing one or more of partially hydrogenated soybean, cottonseed or canola oil, and beef fat. Dextrose, Whole eggs.  2% of less of: Modified corn starch, Cellulose gum, Whey, Leavenings (sodium acid pyrophosphate, baking soda, monocalcium phosphate), Salt, Cornstarch, Corn flour, Corn syrup solids, Mono and diglycerides, Soy lecithin, Polysorbate 60, Dextrin, Calcium caseinate, Sodium stearol lactylate, Wheat gluten, Calcium sulphate, Natural and artificial flavours, Caramel colour, Sorbic acid (to retain freshness), Colour added (yellow 5, red 40).

Why do parents bring this kind of food into the house?  I'm sure a lot of it's easy, convenient, the kid's like it or because it reminds us of when WE were kids and it NEVER hurt us!  I know I have a tendency to buy something that I'm craving and WANT just because my taste buds & mind is saying that it will taste SO good.  Of course after I have it I always think "that just didn't taste like I thought it would".

I know that what I put in my mouth and therefore my body affects me with how I'm feeling throughout the day.  If I eat the type of stuff above I'm more achy, tired, irritable and get easily frustrated.  But if I eat High Quality food (veggies, fruit, meat) and less empty nutrition type foods I will feel so much better.  Have you noticed that?

The foods that you and your family eat directly affect your health. A fruit and vegetable home garden provides assurance that your food has been grown and handled without toxic chemical input. When you grow your own organic fruits and vegetables, you'll be making a positive change that can reduce your risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.

Cultivating Healthy Lifestyles
The key advantage of eating organically is having the peace of mind that the food you're preparing for your family is pure, no artificial flavors or colors, no hydrogenated fats, and no sweeteners or preservatives. Organic foods can be more nutritious and tasty. They are richer in vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids than non-organic foods.

In about a week or so I will be posting a review of a new website called GroOrganic which enables anyone, young and old, new or experienced, to grow an organic garden. You can grow your garden whether you are a family or a single person like me who only has a small balcony, patio or plot - you too can grow High Quality Nutritious food with a minimum of work.

GroOrganic provides an economical way for you to grow organic vegetables and fruit.  They can help you install and maintain your garden, show you how and when to plant your seeds or plants, and provide emails to tell you what to do and how to do it.  They also have a wonderful online software program for you to plan your garden.  You can print it out, lay out which veggies and fruits you want, it'll tell you what and how many plants you need and even print out a list for you to take to your nursery.

I'm really looking forward to this review as I want to do either a square foot garden in a raised bed (maybe 4' x 2'?).  With Fibromyalgia setting into my back I have trouble standing for long so I'm going to be working with GroOrganic to get suggestions and ideas for this to be beneficial and comfortable for me.  Did I mention that they will help me with consulting and helping me set it up?  Stay tuned for my review.
